The Dutch canal has a long valuable history of trading and transportation in Sri Lanka, and it was a blessing especially to the people in Negombo.  The present pathetic situation of the canal is to be developed by the municipal council.  By refining and developing the canal, a prosperous future in fisheries and tourism is expected. Around 8 Km of distance in Maha Oya from Negombo lagoon will be covered by this development.
