Welcome to Negombo Municipal Council

Sri Lanka has twelve Municipal Councils. Negombo is one of them. It has a history of nearly one hundred years. It began its existence in 1878 as a local board. Its first assembly was held under the Chairmanship of Mr.F.R.Saunders. After forty – four years, it became urban district council. The first meeting of this council was held on the 1st of jan. 1922. Negombo celebrated its silver jubilee of its urban council status in grand style in feb 1948. Their Royal highnesses the duck and dutchess of Glocester were the main patrons on the opening day of the celebrations. It was then promoted to the status of urban council and held its first meeting on 13th Jan, 1940. Then it became Municipal Council and held its first meeting on the 1st of jan 1950. Gate – Mudaliyar A.E. Rajapakse was the first Chairmen of the Urban District Council in 1922. He was also a prominent philanthropist who donated to the town the beautiful park named after him.

The Present Municipal Council

The local election is held every five years. There are twenty nine wards within the Municipality boundary and each is represented by an elected member, but at the moment there are only twenty six members. The elections are usually contested on political party manifesto basis. The members of the current Council are:

Standing Committee on Finance

This committee considers all matters concerning finance and advises the Council and is headed by the mayor himself. The other members of the current Finance Committee are:

According by the Statistics in 1997, 11% of the populations of Gampaha District live in the Negombo Municipal area. In 1981, the population within Negombo Municipal area was 71,081 and the population has increased to 121,933 in 2001.
Although the growth rate of the population has been in a decreasing trend, these growth rates are generally high compared with the National growth rate.
